Why TIFF Is Used for Scanning
TIFF is the preferred format for document scanning and archiving. It supports lossless compression, high bit depths, and multiple pages within a single file. Scanners produce TIFF files because they preserve every detail of the original document without compression artifacts.
Why Convert TIFF to PDF
While TIFF is excellent for archiving, it is not ideal for sharing. TIFF files are very large and not universally supported. Converting to PDF creates a smaller, more portable document that anyone can open. PDF also supports features like text search, bookmarks, and security that TIFF lacks.
Converting Multi-Page TIFFs
Many scanners produce multi-page TIFF files containing an entire document. Our converter recognizes multi-page TIFFs and creates one PDF page per TIFF page. The result is a PDF document that mirrors the original scanned document page for page.
Best Practices
Use the original uncompressed or losslessly compressed TIFF files for the best PDF quality. Consider applying OCR to scanned TIFFs before conversion to make the PDF searchable. After conversion, check that all pages were transferred correctly.
